Class Withdraw and Refund Deadline: Students may withdraw from any class for an 80% refund by sending an email to info@macgilliseducation.com before 11:59 p.m. EDT on the day following the first class meeting. No refunds will be given after that date.

Note: Withdrawing from a class may affect any discount you may have received from bundling courses. 

All one-on-one sessions, including those that are part of the essay classes, must be completed within six weeks of the start date.

AP English Language & Composition

Instructor: Laura Sofen

AP English Language & Composition dives deeply into the art and science of rhetoric: the use of effective and persuasive language. Students will master critical thinking and analysis as they read and analyze a variety of texts and write their own arguments. Our class follows the recommended framework from the College Board, exploring rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning and organization, and style. Intensive study will be given to the three required AP Language essays: Synthesis, Rhetorical Analysis, and Argument; as well as targeted instruction and practice on responding to the multiple choice portion of the exam. Students should be prepared to write every week.

 

Meets online 2x/week

 

Prerequisites: This rigorous, college-level course is for ambitious students in grades 10 - 12 who are already skilled at essay writing.

 

Grading: Student work will be evaluated using the AP Lang scoring rubric

 

Homework: A full-length book will be read each semester, to be decided by class survey at the start of the year.

Enrichment AP English Language & Composition

Supplement your AP Language skills and knowledge with our engaging, exam-focused review course designed to deepen your understanding of rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning, organization, and style. Hone your argument-writing skills for each of the free response essay questions on the AP Language exam, and practice test-taking tips for responding to multiple choice questions. Students will receive detailed and personalized feedback on the essays they have already written for their AP Lang course and should be prepared to revise previously written essays in order to practice the skills they've learned.

 

Meets online 1x/week

 

Prerequisites: All students should be currently enrolled in an AP English Language & Composition class either at their school orthrough MEG.

Students should have the ability to share documents.

 

Grading: Student work will be evaluated using the AP Lang scoring rubric

AP English Literature & Composition

34 weeks

7 – 8 p.m. EDT

In AP Literature and Composition, students who love to read will deepen their understanding of literature through the literary analysis of a variety of texts. Through extensive reading, writing, and discussion, students will master the concepts of character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis. Independently and as a class, we will read a multitude of texts that are assessed on the AP Literature exam: short fiction, poetry, drama, and longer fiction. Students will be prepared to respond to the poetry analysis, prose fiction analysis, and literary argument exam essays as well as multiple choice questions.

 

Meets online 2x/week 

 

Prerequisite: This course requires a considerable amount of weekly reading and writing practice and is recommended for ambitious students in grades 11 – 12, with high-achieving 10th graders also invited to register.

 

Grading: Student work will be evaluated using the AP Lit scoring rubric

 

Homework: Most class readings will be provided via pdf or website link, but students will likely need to purchase some texts TBD.
